District facilities closed to the public eclipse weekend through Monday, Aug. 21

Due to safety concerns for visitors and students, all district facilities will be closed to the public for the weekend of the solar eclipse and through the day of the eclipse.

Campuses will be closed to the public from 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 18, 2017, through 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 22, 2017.

The exceptionally large numbers of visitors expected to travel to Salem and Keizer could create severe traffic problems – even gridlock. Local authorities anticipate delays in responding to emergency needs, and will be prioritizing responses based upon available resources. This could mean limited, delayed or possibly no support for urgent circumstances.

Normal rental uses of schools have been cancelled or rescheduled. A very few exceptions for use have been granted to some high schools for required programs on Saturday, August 19, 2017, only. Exceptions were granted through a stringent and early application process, and no additional exceptions to district facility use during the closure period will be granted.

Information for staff about reporting to work on the day of the eclipse can be found on the district intranet, or contact your supervisor.

For information about preparing for the eclipse event, please see the following websites.

Information from local agencies:

Attached is the list of school supplies needed for each grade.

Please also remember that students will need a good pair of tennis shoes for P.E. Flip flops, dress shoes, or shoes that don't fit properly pose a safety hazard to students and are therefore strongly discouraged for P.E. Thank you!

Summer Reading Club

posted Jun 5, 2017, 1:34 PM by Chapman Hill

Every summer, Salem Public Library provides an incentive-based program to encourage kids and teens to read throughout the summer, thus helping to prevent the  "Summer Slide". Summer Reading Club is a fun way for all ages to spend time reading in the summer.  Prizes and activities encourage kids to read for enjoyment, increase confidence, and expand their horizons.

In addition, the Salem Library offers a listening club for pre-readers and their parents to encourage the continued development of early literacy skills that babies, toddlers and preschoolers need in order to become readers. Reading is the most important skill needed for all other lifelong learning.

Everyone (babies through adults) is invited to join the Summer Reading Club at Salem Public Library and "Build a Better World!" Sign ups begin June 6 at the Main Library or online at www.salemlibrary.org. Kids and teens are encouraged to keep track of reading or listening to books or audio books during the summer, and earn prizes. In addition, Salem Public Library is offering a wide variety of performances and activities for all ages throughout the summer. Flyers are attached in English and Spanish
